Semper Fi Bar & Grille Partners With Bloodfire Orchards to Turn Food Waste into Compost

WOODSTOCK, CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA - SEPTEMBER 2022

Bloodfire Orchard is a new permaculture inspired food forest located in middle Georgia that is working to create a 12 acre agroforest around nut trees, perennial foods and medicinals like turmeric and elderberry. An attached 8 acre oak forest is home to compost creation and soon to be added medicinal plants and inoculated mushroom logs.

“The goal is to work with the land the way God intended - with Mother Nature, not against her. That means a carefully crafted bio diverse ecology, utilizing natures gifts and no chemicals,” explains Heather Fritz, orchardist and owner of Bloodfire Orchards, LLC.

“Food, fertilizer and compost prices have been accelerating and I feel an overwhelming urgency to grow food,” said Heather. “I was introduced to restoration agriculture, permaculture and growing turmeric early in 2022 and the sustainable principles made sense, especially when the world stopped making sense.”

A 12 acre parcel was initially cleared, but there is still more to be done. Heather wants to plant hundreds of hazelnuts, elderberry, and turmeric as well as other medicinals that God puts on her radar. A cover crop will be planted this fall and the land will be sculpted to hold rainwater - to be as sustainable and drought proof as possible. Compost is a huge need for this space along with mulch.

“I presented the idea of Semper Fi Bar & Grille working with a local startup orchard to put food waste to the best use possible, converting it to nutrient dense compost to grow more food. Both the owner and general manager were open to implementing a new process to capture food scraps and that is great for us both,” Heather explains.

Carrie Roeger, owner of Semper Fi Bar and Grille and the newly selling franchise, Rally Point Grille explains, “Witnessing the enormity of food waste in the restaurant business, we are delighted to work with a local grower that is dedicated to turning our food scraps into compost. This is such a great solution and it feels good to know that we are positively impacting our environment. It’s a little thing we can do to contribute to a solution that supports permanent agriculture and as a restaurant owner that is of vital importance to me,” Carrie continued.

Anthony Regrets, the restaurant’s GM added, “We are empowering someone who wants to grow food to grow organically and I feel better knowing that the inevitable food waste we experience will now be actively working to better our environment and support more food growth. Every restaurant should implement something like this.”
